Carpet and Flooring Identification

Our CarpeTells can identify

The most commonly encountered carpet and flooring materials used:

  • PP (Polypropylene)
  • Nylon 6 (also known as polyamide 6)
  • Nylon 66 (also known as polyamide 66)
  • PET (Polyester)
  • PTT (Polytrimethylene terephthalate)
  • Wool
  • PVC (Polyvinyl chloride, also known as vinyl flooring and luxury vinyl flooring)
  • PU (Polyurethane)
  • Wool-Nylon blends
  • PET-PTT blends
  • Nylon 6 - PTT blends

Our CarpeTells cannot identify

  • Flooring containing carbon black. This pigment causes all the infrared light to be absorbed and as a result, we don't get any useful information from the sample.  This is a problem shared with other NIR identification devices and there isn't much we can do.
  • Heavily soiled carpets. However, if there are small areas of clean, unstained carpet, the material can be identified.
  • The materials in carpet backings - but we're working on adding support for this.
